10 adorbs summer sandals that won’t totally destroy your feet

I’ll never forget the summer I spent a little too much money on a pair of strappy, super tight, close-toed black heels. I was so excited about these shoes that I wore them out of the store, ignoring the salesgirl’s warning that I wouldn’t be able to return them. By the time I walked from the mall to my bus stop, I knew I’d made a mistake. They pinched my big toes so much that I actually winced in pain. But rather than retiring these heels as I should have, I stubbornly insisted on wearing them everywhere, convincing myself I just needed to break them in. I wound up losing both (!) my big toenails days later. So much for sexy summer feet!

Don’t make the same mistake I did. Especially because it could have been even worse. Jackie Sutera, a podiatrist and spokesperson for the shoe company Vionic, tells me that she sees women in her office all the time with minor injuries, including stress fractures, heel pain, pinched nerves and tendonitis, from improper footwear. Want to avoid messing up your feet? “Women should avoid shoes that are extreme,” Sutera says. “Very high, flat, thin and open shoes should be worn in moderation and not for any long periods of standing and walking. Overuse of these summer shoes can cause short-term as well as long-term injuries.”

So what foot-healthy shoes can you buy that are actually fashionable? More than you might think. Take a look.
