The kiwi fruit features dull brown skin and bright green juicy flesh with rows of small, black, edible seeds. This soft fruit has a unique flavor that is popular in many countries around the world. But kiwi isn’t just delicious, it’s healthy too.
The kiwi fruit originated from China; more specifically the Zhejiang Province. It is believed that the fruit’s potential was discovered by New Zealand nurses who used it, among other things, to make a type of wine.
Introduced in the US from New Zealand in the 1950’s by the company Turners and Growers, the kiwis in America would initially be called “melonettes.” This, however, was not to last. Due to melons and berries’ high import taxes and the stigma attached to both, the name would later become Kiwifruit, suggested of course for their New Zealand origin; a name that would stick and become industry wide.
The kiwi fruit has long been known to be a very nutritious fruit. In fact, a study conducted by Dr. Paul Lachance of Rutgers University determined, by evaluating the nutritional value of fruits, that ounce for ounce, the kiwi is the most nutrient dense fruit out of the 27 most commonly consumed fruits.
A kiwi contains twice the amount of Vitamin C of an orange, twice the amount of Vitamin E as an avocado, and 20 percent more potassium than a banana. It contains folic acid, as well as being a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron and copper.
It has been discovered that eating kiwi daily can provide protection against the development of certain types of cancer as well as significantly lower the risk of blood clots and reduce the amount of fats in your blood.
A 2004 study determined that the daily consumption of kiwi had the power to reduce asthma by almost 40 percent. To top things off, kiwi has a high lutein content, which is an antioxidant that can significantly decrease the risk of advanced age related macular (vision) degeneration.
Most people like to eat the kiwi by removing the outer skin. However the slightly fuzzy skin contains many nutrients. Therefore, it is recommended by some that the kiwi be consumed in its entirety to take full advantage of its nutritious value.
Due to its unique flavor, kiwi has become a popular addition to a number of different salads including, fresh fruit salads and coleslaw, as well as chicken and turkey salads.
