Healthy eating habits: Encourage drinking water

Warmer weather is here and your children are likely to be thirstier than ever. Water is the best thirst quencher, and is responsible for some big tasks in our bodies. It aids in digestion, regulates body temperature, delivers nutrients to cells, and carries waste away.

Keep a fresh pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator at all times, serve water at every meal. Water is more thirst-quenching than sugary drinks. Offer water as a first choice to your children all of the time.
For babies under 12 months old, too much water can be unhealthy. As a general rule, healthy babies under 6 months old do not need extra water. Once they have started on solid foods, their need for water increases and you can offer 2 to 4 ounces at each meal.
