Why do I love thee? 10 Poems from Zach Thecatt
Valentine's Day is not just for humans. Get to know the softer side of Zach Thecatt, a young cat romantic, who happens to be madly in love.
Hello Lady Human,
This morning, on the table, I discovered the card that you purchased for the male of your species. Please forget that I mentioned being up on the table. I know that you've asked me not to be, and I cringe at the idea of upsetting you again. You have such a beautiful smile.
I hope you don't mind, but I read the message you wish to tell your male suitor. The words are charming, but alas, I must wonder what your male suitor will say in reply. Perhaps he will say, "Thank you, you're sweet," as he tucks your thoughtful card into the drawer that holds his foot-furs (I believe that your kind calls them socks).
It's unclear how a male of your species might react to sentiment, which is why I worry that you will not feel loved on the day you humans dedicate to that very word. Love — you speak of it as though you know its meaning, but your words fail to capture the beauty it holds. And yet, while you believe that I spend my days napping near the window or stretching in the sun, the truth is that I spend my days seeking to understand this thing you call love. I seek to answer the question, "Why do I love thee?" And much to my surprise, the answer has come to me as easily as you come to me when I tell you I am ready for my dinner.
The answer, sweet lady human, cannot be expressed in words that are plain. And so I have compiled the best of your words, just as some of your species have done in times past. I believe you call these humans poets, and today I wish that I were a poet, too. Ten poems have I written for you in your native language in hope that you will soon see that the male of your species will never love you like I do. He thinks first of the box in the kitchen that holds your human food, while I think only of my place by your side.
I love you, my sweet lady human. These words are my heart, and my homage, to you.
"Wherever you go"
"How do I love thee?"
"The name of love"
"Laser of my eye"
"Nourished by love"
"The place we go"
And so, my sweet lady human, remember me on your day of love. When your male suitor rejects your advances, remember this: I will always be there, curled up by your side, proving my devotion to you.
