The novelty of not only a new month but a new year may have you pointing a sharper eye toward your habits, routines and skills. In addition to resolving to move more and to (maybe, finally) learn to meditate, you might also challenge yourself to be a better parent. While admittedly, you’re already pretty darn awesome, being aware of outside factors that impact your communication, energy and mood might give you an extra hand to prep for a tantrum before it happens.

According to astrologist Tracy Atkinson, there is plenty of movement in the planets, and it all influences your daily life and interactions with your kids, your partner, your pals and your colleagues. Specifically, through January 2018, you might be feeling an extra dose of enthusiasm you haven’t had in months past (you know, because you’ve been #busy). As Atkinson explains, “Mars is a fiery planet of action, and Jupiter expands, continuing to make the next two and half weeks quite powerful. This is [when] courage and confidence are high, making it an excellent time to take initiative and bust through some fears — and support a child to conquer theirs.”

Here, a glimpse into your parenting horoscope for January 2018.

1/12 :Aries: March 21 – April 19

Aries, for those first 31 days of 2018, Atkinson says Jupiter and Mars will fall in your eighth house of transformation — which means you might feel an extra pull to make changes in your life. Here’s where you can utilize that whirlwind of energy you often feel. Though you might feel super-recharged and ready to turn everything upside down, Atkinson recommends taking a breather to stay connected to your family. Even when your go-get-’em spirit abounds, your partner or those babes who adore you might need a little more TLC as they begin a new year too.

2/12 :Taurus: April 20 – May 20

Atkinson explains that added emphasis from Jupiter and Mars in your seventh house may make you feel more passionate toward your partner this month, Taurus. All that lust might make you feel like life is getting bigger — and at times more complicated — so tune into your grounded attitude to keep the peace. “Your world is expanding this month and will continue to expand throughout the year. Your children may be going through some growing pains, but as per your Taurus nature, your ability to stay calm and centered is a great comfort to them,” Atkinson says.

3/12 :Gemini: May 21 – June 21

Whether you've been thinking about signing up for a half-marathon, want to make more of your own baby food at home with locally sourced ingredients or are motivated to finally make a case for that raise that's long overdue, now is an ideal time to begin reaching for your goals, Gemini. Atkinson explains that Jupiter and Mars are currently in your sixth house of health, work and career. “This is a great time to start a new exercise routine, as Mars is giving you some extra energy and motivation to get started,” she explains.

She also adds that your children might be growing up faster than you can believe this month, and maybe even taking on additional responsibilities. So be their cheerleader. “As per your Gemini nature, support your child’s growth by inspiring the love of learning and being open to new things,” Atkinson says.

4/12 :Cancer: June 22 – July 22

You already know your kids — those balls of (adorable) energy — are capable of anything, but this month, you might feel overwhelmed with just how much happiness and hope you feel for them. Since Jupiter and Mars are in your fifth house of children, you and your kiddos may excel and build more confidence in January. “This is an exciting time of expansion and responsibility,” Atkinson notes. Here’s where you’ll want to practice the fine art of balance, as you explore new hobbies, crafts, activities and challenges that initiate growth. While it’s all exciting, it might be intense too. “To stay calm and be the best parent you can be, rely on your ability to be supportive and nurturing and retreat when you need to,” she recommends.

5/12 :Leo: July 23 – Aug. 22

As you stride into January, your mantra might be "I am mama; hear me roar," what with Jupiter and Mars hanging strong in your fourth house. Here, Atkinson explains Leos might be inspired to go into full-on work mode, but it’s important to prioritize the needs of your family on your trailblazing road to success. (Not only because they rely on you, but also because Atkinson notes they might have specific needs this time of year.)

You might also get into unwarranted arguments or take statements personally this month when really, remaining centered would serve you — and your fam — much better. “Be careful to stay calm and not let the views of others get to you. One of your children may be going through a maturing process and learning to become more independent. Share your warm and charismatic light with them as only a Leo can do, and watch them thrive and blossom,” Atkinson shares.

6/12 :Virgo: Aug. 23 – Sept. 22

Wish you could introduce your babes to the wonders of the world? Get your passport warmed up, Atkinson says, since Jupiter and Mars are jet-setting through your third house this month, making it more likely you’ll be taking short trips or staying out and about. These jaunts could also spark your creativity as long as you don’t let self-doubt get the best of you. Those kids of yours will reap the benefits of your wanderlust spirit and may feel more independent this month. Though you may not want them to fly the coop (just yet, anyway), Atkinson says to “do your best to let go of any worry and instead support them in this rewarding and beautiful process.”

7/12 :Libra: Sept. 23 – Oct. 22

While financial matters might not be the most exciting venture you and your partner dabble in, Atkinson says Jupiter and Mars in your second house of career and finances will make it that much more important to double down on your earnings and plans for saving. Since the second house is also the home of speech, you might find yourself speaking in public or teaching in January too. This goes both ways, though, Atkinson warns, since Libras could also be quick to respond, retaliate or rebut those in your life — without a filter. This, along with the path of Saturn soaring through your fourth house of family and roots, means you need to give more attention to your children and your home, Atkinson adds.

8/12 :Scorpio: Oct. 23 – Nov. 21

Did the chaos of the holiday season wear you down big-time, Scorpio? Time to take a big breath, shake it off and own it this month. As Atkinson says, you’ll be on fire in January, when Jupiter and Mars are nestled in your first house of self. Not only will you feel impassioned, inspired and badass, but your children will feed off those vibes too. “Your world is expanding... have the confidence to take charge and run with it,” Atkinson urges. “One or more of your children are thriving, and that adds to your all-around happiness. You are able to connect well with your children now and support them in their own exciting growth period.”

9 /12: Sagittarius: Nov. 22 – Dec. 21

9/12 :Sagittarius: Nov. 22 – Dec. 21

Are you normally the life of the party even if it’s the fastest ever post-work happy hour before the kids get home from school, Sagittarius? Well, you might retreat more in January. Atkinson explains that Jupiter and Mars in your 12th house make the need for alone time and reflection a priority for Sagittarians. But don't get too holed up and carried away, you hermit. Get out of your head and into your life by finally signing up for that language or pottery class you’ve been meaning to take forever.

You may also be itching to hit the road. “January is a good time to travel with your children and expand your consciousness and theirs by stepping out of the mundane and seeing other cultures, landscapes and possibilities,” Atkinson explains.

10 /12: Capricorn: Dec. 22 – Jan. 19

10/12 :Capricorn: Dec. 22 – Jan. 19

As much as you treasure your family, there’s nothing quite like the company of trusted — and ridiculous — friends who have been through all of life’s transitions with you, Capricorn. Since Jupiter and Mars are going through your 11th house, your social life is expanding. Atkinson says this means you should be prepared for plenty of gathering, chatting and connecting as January rolls on. Not only could this mean new pals, but potentially career success too. “You may be making new friends, joining new groups or finding a new community, but in either or all cases, this is an exciting time. There is also a possibility of a job or career shift,” Atkinson says.

Your kids will follow your example, meaning they might find surprise accomplishments too — from figuring out how to use the potty to nailing that science exam. As Atkinson explains, “Jupiter and Mars also aspect your fifth house of children, marking a time of expansion and growth for one or more of your children."

11 /12: Aquarius: Jan. 20 – Feb. 18

11/12 :Aquarius: Jan. 20 – Feb. 18

If you’ve been worried about where your career is going, Aquarius, take a breather. In January, Jupiter and Mars will transit your 10th house, pushing you, your skills and your warm, quirky personality into the spotlight. In addition to seeing more recognition and heightened attention in the public eye, you might also make new friends or even earn more money on those paychecks. The struggle will be real, though, Atkinson says, since all this time in front of other people makes you want to retreat on your own. While some baths for one or a glass of wine after the kids are asleep might help, Atkinson stresses the importance of staying connected to your fam. “Remember to spend time in the in-between place[s] of children and family that are your foundation and greatest teachers,” she notes.

12/12 :Pisces: Feb. 19 – March 20

Atkinson explains that Jupiter and Mars in Pisces' ninth house give you the energy to learn something new and satisfy your curiosity. This might mean making changes in your go-to pals, as new friendships will bring light to toxic ones. "You’re feeling strong and may be making some changes in your social circle," Atkinson explains. "A longtime friend my fall away, or you might find yourself in a new group. At first, it might feel strange and like you don’t belong, but be patient, as you will slowly but surely begin to feel like part of the group." During this period, you’ll want to involve your children, who will be a welcomed addition to friend-group activities or even as travel buddies for a long weekend.

And remember: Mentors come in all professions, life cycles and ages, so let January be a time when you’re open to the lessons of others you might encounter. “A teacher could come into your life that you find inspiring and who opens up new ways of seeing," Atkinson adds.
