Liam and Elizabeth are the new top 10 picks
Liam is new to the top 10 list this year, beating out Daniel. The increased popularity of the name Liam could possibly be in part due to The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth (who is also engaged to Miley Cyrus), actor Liam Neeson and boy band One Direction’s Liam Payne.
Elizabeth is the girl name that is new to the top 10 list this year, beating out Chloe. The increased popularity of Elizabeth could be due to the renewed interest in the royal family and Queen Elizabeth. In fact, perhaps Kate Middleton will name her child Elizabeth? This name also has quite a few cute nicknames, including Liz, Lizzie, Eli and Beth.
Girl names Arya and Perla gaining in popularity
The Social Security Administration (SSA) also tracks baby names that are climbing the charts the fastest in the top 500 to showcase new trends. The baby girl name Arya is climbing the charts the fastest jumping up to number 413, perhaps due to the character Arya Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Perla is the baby girl name that is climbing the charts the second fastest, which the SSA contributes to the increase of Spanish-speaking Americans. Catalina and Elisa are two girl names rising in popularity, while the name Dulce showed the biggest drop on the list.
Last year, the name Briella was the girl name with the biggest gain in popularity.
Boy names Major and Jase are heating up
The fastest boy name to move ahead is the unique name Major, climbing up to 483 on the baby name list. “I have no doubt Major’s rising popularity as a boy’s name is in tribute to the brave members of the U.S. military, and maybe we’ll see more boys named General in the future,” said Carolyn Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security.
HGTV designers Cortney and Robert Novogratz star on the show Home by Novogratz with their seven kids — and their youngest child is named Major, possibly contributing to the rise in popularity. In case you were wondering, their other children are named Wolfgang, Bellamy, Tallulah, Breaker, Holleder and Five.
The second fastest rising name for boys is Gael, which is categorized as an Irish name, but it is also the name of Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Jase is another boy’s name climbing the charts, possibly due to Jase Robertson from the reality show Duck Dynasty.
Brantley was the boy name climbing the charts the fastest last year.
