Southern belle Reese Witherspoon gave birth to a baby boy today! This is the third child for the star — who decided to name her son Tennessee James after her home state. We explore more of the meaning behind Reese’s southern baby name choice.
After following her stylish pregnancy the past few months, we are excited to announce that Reese Witherspoon has given birth to her third child today!
“Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth welcomed Tennessee James into their family today,” their rep said in a statement to People. “Both Mom and Baby are healthy and the entire family is thrilled.”
Witherspoon and her husband Toth picked the very southern sounding baby name of Tennessee James for their son, who joins siblings Ava, 13, and Deacon, 8.
Why Tennessee James?
Witherspoon was born in Louisiana, but actually grew up in Nashville, Tennessee — which is the obvious reason for why the star picked this unusual name. She has often talked about her love of the south and has appeared in several movies, including Sweet Home Alabama and Walk the Line that are based in the south.
She recently gushed about her home state, telling Elle Décor that her southern childhood is why she bought a ranch in Ojai, California. “It reminds me of growing up in Tennessee, where we spent all day outside. ”I wanted my children to have that experience, to get muddy and hang out with the animals. … It’s like having a little bit of Tennessee in California.”
Tennessee is quite a mouthful of a name, so perhaps Reese plans on calling her son a shortened version of the name… Tenny? Or she might call him by his middle name, James?
Witherspoon isn’t the first celebrity to name her child after a city or state. Sons of Anarchy actress Drea de Matteo and Shooter Jennings named their daughter Alabama Gypsyrose, while Victoria Beckham named her son Brooklyn.
