Rosy cheeks are cute, but sometimes they can hurt! Our expert advice and kid-friendly products will help moms manage problems like chapped lips and dry hands. You can also learn how to develop an effective dry skin care routine for your kids through the winter months.
Dry winter skin
Kids have sensitive skin, and the winter weather (not to mention the dry indoor heat) can wreak havoc on their delicate hands, faces and lips. Take child skin care seriously and follow these tips to curb the effects of winter dry skin.
Kids’ winter skin care at home
Before combating your child’s winter dry skin with soaps and protective moisturizers, implement some savvy at-home methods into the daily routine to help build a foundation to keep their skin smooth, soft and safe from the elements.
While a hot bath may be toasty and comforting in the winter chill, it will dry the skin. “Wash hands, hair and bodies with warm – not hot – water,” says Heather Halpern, director of research and development at Kiss My Face. And you may want to swaddle up those little bodies in a cozy towel immediately after a tub. “After washing, apply a moisturizing lotion while skin is still damp to seal in moisture,” Halpern adds.
Child skin care ingredients to use and avoid
Some ingredients are friendlier than others when it comes to moisturizing a child’s skin. “Artificial fragrances and colors are found in the majority of children’s products,” says Halpern. “They don’t contribute to the performance; they’re added to make the product appeal to kids.” She also recommends avoiding other ingredients commonly found in body care products like parabens, phthalates and SLS.
Natural ingredients are the way to go, says Halpern, so keep an eye out for non-sulfate shampoos, gentle plant-derived cleansers, organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, antioxidant Vitamin E and aloe vera.
