Snacking is synonymous with movie night. But before you host your own mini film festival, you’ll want to arm yourself with some serious snacks that will blow plain old popcorn out of the water. Here are three kicked-up movie-time snack favorites that will leave your movie night guests reaching for more.
White chocolate popcorn snack mix
This sweet and salty conglomerate may not look pretty, but one bite and all of your movie night guests will be hooked. It satisfies both those with a sweet tooth and those who crave a salty crunch. Plus, you can whip it together in no time. Servings: vary
- 1 10-ounce package mini twist pretzels
- 4 cups toasted oat cereal
- 4 cups crispy corn cereal squares
- 2 cups salted peanuts
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 14-ounce package candy-coated milk chocolate pieces
- 2 11-ounce packages white chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Line 3 baking sheets with waxed paper, then set aside.
- Combine the pretzels, both cereals, peanuts, raisins, and candy-coated chocolate pieces in a large bowl.
- In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate chips with the oil.
- On medium, microwave the chocolate and oil in 2 to 3 30-second intervals, stirring in between each interval, until chocolate is smooth and melted.
- Pour over cereal mixture and mix well.
- Spread onto prepared baking sheets and allow to cool.
- Break into snackable bite size pieces before serving.
Nachos at the movie house are essentially just stale chips drowned in processed cheese sauce topped with a few jalapeno slices for flair. Hey, I love ’em too… I’m just sayin’! - 1 pound lean ground turkey
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons cumin
- Pinch of salt
- 1 small can refried black beans or 1 small can of whole black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 12 oz. bag multi-grain tortilla chips
- 1 pound medium cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Monterey jack cheese, shredded
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 6-ounce can diced green chiles
- 1 6-ounce can black olives, chopped
- In a large skillet, brown the ground turkey over medium-high heat. Drain.
- Add the chili powder, cumin and salt.
- Next, spray the bottom on an oven-proof bowl or platter (such at a 9-by-13-inch dish) with cooking spray, then spread a layer of refried beans or the whole black beans along the bottom.
- Top the beans with some chips, and a layer of cheese, ground turkey, onion, tomato, green chiles and olives.
- Repeat about three times, or until all the ingredients are used
- Bake at 375° for 20 to 30 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve warm with salsa and sour cream.
Easy ice cream sandwiches
Every movie buff finds it tough to pass up the giant Tollhouse chocolate cookie ice cream sandwich during a brief bathroom break and snack run at the movie theater. So when your at-home movie night hits the half-way mark, be prepared to serve a satisfying little snack that will hit the sweet spot every time. Servings: vary
- 2 packages of “break-apart” chocolate chip cookies (or your favorite variety, such as sugar or white chocolate macadamia nut. Hey, make ’em all if you want!)
- 1 large tub vanilla ice cream (or, once again, your fave variety. Get creative!)
- Prepare the cookies according to the directions on the package well before movie night begins and allow to cool. We mean completely.
- About five minutes before you’re ready to assemble your “sandwiches” set the ice cream on the counter to soften. You’ll want to be able to spread it a little, but it shouldn’t be melted or dripping.
- Take a pair of cookies (when you are playing in fancy combos, think about what might taste best together such as double chocolate chip cookies with cherry ice cream, sugar cookies with peach ice cream, or the classic chocolate chip with vanilla). Make sure your pair of cookies matches, if you made more than one kind.
- Dollop a large spoonful of ice cream and spread around the “bottom” of one cookie, then top it with the other one.
- Gently squeeze the cookies together to seal the sandwich, scraping any excess ice cream around the circumference of the sandwich.
- Wrap in plastic wrap and toss in the freezer immediately.
- Repeat the process until you are out of either cookies or ice cream.
- Allow cookie sandwiches to set in freezer for at least 3 hours.
- Unwrap before serving.
