There was a lot of fashion on display at the inauguration ceremony, but Vice President Kamala Harris’ grandnieces captured our attention with their glam matching snow leopard-printed coats. Those are practical and stylish looks we can get behind. Plus, they have some special significance behind them.
Harris’ niece Meena Harris shared a photo of her daughters with husband Nikolas Ajagu. There’s a photo of them from today, side-by-side with a 1972 photo of a young Kamala and her sister Maya (Meena’s mother). Four-year-old Amara and 2-year-old Leela wore similar animal-print jackets to pay homage to their great-aunt, who just made history today as the first female, Black and South Asian vice president. The pair accompanied their mom and dad to the inauguration ceremony and along the ceremonial walk to the White House.

This isn’t the first time Harris’ grand-nieces have twinned with her. On the eve of Biden and Harris’ victory, Harris wore an all-white suit, representing the white of the suffragette movement, and Amara and Leela wore all-white ensembles to match.
Harris’ own look, along with Dr. Jill Biden’s, might inspire people to start filling their shopping carts with purple and teal monochrome outfits, but don’t discount stylish icons Amara and Leela. Everyone is going to be wearing these coats on the playground.
Unfortunately these coats aren’t yet available from iloveplum, the designer Meena Harris reportedly worked with to make them, but we found the most similar options for your little ones. We even tracked down the masks and shoes that Amara and Leela were wearing.
