If you have a child with sensory processing issues and/or a physical disability, you already know how difficult clothing shopping can be. Some materials cause discomfort, some styles are impractical, and fit is almost always a problem. The garments need to be adjustable, and each piece should offer a multitude of ways to get in and out. But one retailer is hoping to make the entire experience a little easier: Kohl’s just launched an adaptive clothing line, and these pieces are fashionable and functional.
Kohl’s announced the wheelchair- and sensory-friendly collection on its website.
“Kohl’s is continuously evolving its brand portfolio to better serve our customers,” the release read. “Once the idea of adaptive clothing was introduced, Kohl’s associates were eager to bring it to life.” And that included Judy Koepsel, a technical design manager and mother of a 3-year-old daughter with developmental and sensory needs.
“It really gained steam after Judy got wind of it,” Stephanie Curtis, associate product manager for girls sportswear at Kohl’s, said in the press release. “When the product design team introduced the idea to our partners, everyone felt a personal connection to this cause. It’s a heartstring project, and enthusiasm to make it happen was really easy to come by.”
The new line comes in a variety of sizes for babies, toddlers, children, and juniors — and with wide neck and hem lines, abdominal access, diaper access and hook and loop closures, these pieces make quality apparel accessible to all.
“We recognize that a little ease goes a long way,” Kohl’s statement said. “That’s why we’re introducing adaptive designs from a few of your favorite brands,” including Urban Pipeline, SO and Jumping Beans.
The pieces are also affordable. Shirts start at $6.99, pants at $9.09 and dresses start at $16.80.
Kohl’s is not the first retailer to release an adaptive line. Target’s adaptive clothing debuted in 2017. Tommy Hilfiger, best known for its high-end sportswear, has Tommy Adaptive, a line of clothing for children and adults with various needs, and Zappos sells adaptive shoes and clothing.
Adaptive Halloween costumes are also becoming increasingly available.
So kudos, Kohl’s: for being mindful, thoughtful, compassionate, inclusive — and cute to boot.
