Meghan King Edmonds Shares That Her Son Has Permanent Brain Damage In Heartbreaking Post

Meghan King Edmonds, an alumna of Real Housewives of Orange County, recently shared that she and her husband, Jim Edmonds, recently learned that one of their twin sons has irreversible brain damage. In a post titled “My Hart,” for her son, Hart, 13 months, she wrote not only about the diagnosis but also the grueling lengths she had to go through to get it.

“From the minute he was born I knew something was different with Hart,” she began, before detailing the number of times she sought help with a diagnosis and was turned away or told not to worry about it.

“I told our pediatrician – she said he was fine.  I begged for a neurologist referral and when I got it – he said he was fine,” she wrote. Other doctors and treatments she sought out included a chiropractor, cranial sacral therapy, and a pediatric ophthalmologist.

“Well, I knew.  I always knew.  I just knew…” she explains.

Finally, after an elective MRI under anesthesia, King Edmonds learned her son has minor Periventricular Leukomalacia, which is a form of irreversible brain damage that can affect muscle function and development and may lead to Cerebral Palsy. More common in premature babies, Hart was born full term at 37 weeks, making it harder to diagnose.

King Edmonds; post is also a reminder of the kinds of things mothers—even ones with access and privilege—have to endure to get their children’s health taken seriously. It’s hard to think that someone in this situation could see themselves as lucky, but King Edmonds has says, amidst the diagnosis, she sees a bright side as well.

In the post, King Edmonds also reveals that she then went out with her husband “for the first time in weeks” amidst reports of his infidelity. Putting their child first, King Edmonds wrote that she told her husband, “we are not somehow compromised or punished for having a child with special needs (whatever that may or may not mean!), we are BLESSED.”
