Teen use of tampons

The question:
My daughter just started getting her period about 3 months ago. Can she wear tampons? When I was a teen, I remember that we weren’t supposed to, and wonder why we were told that and whether or not it is safe. If it is okay, is there something particular I should tell her? – Mardie, Falls Church VA

The Pediatrician Answers:
The new teen tampons are fine for teens to use when they are swimming or doing sports. Teens need to be cautioned that tampons must be changed frequently to prevent colonization with staph and other bacteria.

I would recommend that young teens not use tampons all the time, but use pads primarily, with tampons reserved for occasional use.
