Birth Doula Kim Kardashian West Is Reporting for Leg-Holding Duty
Kim Kardashian West: reality TV star, entrepreneur, master of the selfie, wife, mother and... doula?
In a recent interview with Access, Kardashian West revealed that she'd be taking on a new and exciting role as a childbirth assistant for her sister, Khloé Kardashian, who is pregnant with her first child.
"She was in my delivery room both times," Kardashian West told Access. "She was the leg holder, that was Khloé's responsibility. She was good at it. She was really like the doula, the coach, the everything all-in-one. I want to be that for Khloé."
Though holding down your sister’s legs as she pushes may not be the most glamorous job, it’s an important one. A study conducted for the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that women felt more comfortable and less stressed about the birthing process when they had a trusted individual providing empathetic emotional support. Just having a “familiar attendant” nearby to communicate both logistics and words of encouragement helped women feel more secure and more confident.
Kardashian West may not be a professionally trained doula, but her experience as a mother and as a sister is likely to help calm Kardashian’s nerves on what will likely be one of the most exciting — and scary — days of her life. But Kardashian West isn’t the only one who will be nearby for the delivery; Kardashian West said her whole family would be present in Cleveland, Ohio, for Kardashian's delivery. And as of now, there’s no word yet on whether they’ll choose to invite the entire Keeping Up with the Kardashians film crew too.
And Kardashian West also isn't the only member of the family sharing her mom wisdom with Kardashian. During a recent interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Kimmel, Kardashian confided that sister Kourtney Kardashian, also a parent, has been very vocal about the do's and don'ts of motherhood — with a massive emphasis on the don’ts. What’s on Kourtney's list of no-nos? Putting a TV in the nursery and allowing children to play with plastic toys. As for whether she’ll follow her sister’s guidance, Khloé Kardashian laughed and said, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
Like many new mothers, Khloé Kardashian’s been getting a lot of unwarranted advice lately as fans criticize her workout regimens and pick apart her photos from the past. We hope she's mostly shrugging it off and reminding herself that sometimes mother (that's you now, Khloé) really does know best.
