This Kid From Stranger Things Has a Kid, & We Had No Idea
So Jonathan Byers is a dad now. What? That is, British actor Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan on '80s-tastic Netflix masterpiece Stranger Things, is reportedly a dad in real life. Did you know about this?!
Recently, publications including Teen Vogue and Us Weekly have reported that, according to an anonymous source close to Heaton and his ex-girlfriend, Akiko Matsuura, the two allegedly have a son together.
Of course, we've loved Heaton's mysterious, shaggy-haired big-brother character since Stranger Things premiered in July 2016, and given Jonathan's fatherly care of little bro Will — especially in Season 2 — it's not too tough to picture Heaton as a papa.
Last we heard of Heaton, though, he had missed the Stranger Things 2 premiere after being detained at LAX because of trace amounts of cocaine in his luggage. Heaton was sent back to the U.K. and released this statement:
“My planned travel to the U.S. last week was affected by an issue at U.S. immigration, and I am working to rectify it as soon as possible. I do want to clarify that I was not arrested or charged with a crime, and cooperated fully with the U.S. officials at LAX. I’m sorry to all the fans and my Stranger Things family for missing the premiere. We are all so proud of this season and I would never want this story to negatively impact the show.”
Whether this baby (toddler, actually) news is putting a positive spin on the Heaton chronicles is still up for debate. The Daily Mail reports that Heaton and Matsuura met when they were 20 and were in a band together (because of course they were). Their band, Comanechi, was still rocking when Matsuura reportedly became pregnant in 2014.
Matsuura now allegedly has custody of their 3-year-old boy in London, where she performs as part of the band The Big Pink. No details on the reported parents' split, but Heaton has been recently romantically linked to ST costar Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler.
An unnamed source reported to the The Sunthat "Charlie became a dad when he was just 20. He met Akiko when he was just a teen and fell head-over-heels in love... They're no longer together but they have an amicable relationship for the boy's sake... Right now Charlie's career is his priority but he hopes to see more of his son once filming commitments calm down."
As with so many celeb baby rumors, Heaton and Matsuura have not commented on this speculation publicly, so do take it with a grain of salt. Much like with all things Stranger Things, we may know a lot less here than we think we do. And speaking of, we'll head back to binge-watching now. Excuse us.
