Scarlett Johansson Is Keeping It Real About Motherhood
We get so weary hearing from celeb parents who profess to totally have their shit together. Because, hey, newsflash: Parenting is a whole lot easier with 1) massive amounts of disposable income; 2) as much trained, vetted, paid help as you need; 3) a private family compound in Bora Bora. Go ahead and write all the “moms can have it all!” self-help books you want from your Bora Bora hammock, celebrity moms, but it’s just never, ever going to ring true to us out here crawling through mud and barbed wire in the real-world parenting trenches.
So that’s why our weary ears perked up today when we heard what sounded like a voice of celebrity sanity in the distance. Scarlett, is that you? Not trying to sell us… anything? Just commiserating and admitting that this mom gig is freaking hard? Oh, girl. Pull up a chair.
Theactress is pretty much a breath of fresh air in a very smug and smoggy celeb parenting world. Johansson is not just working, like, all the time, but she (very) recently separated from her husband of two years, Romain Dauriac. And she’s raising a toddler, Rose Dorothy.
How’s she doing? Well, in Johansson’s own words, she’s “barely holding it together.” Oh, man.
Bring it in, Scarlett. We’ve got all the love and hugs for you. We know. We really, really know.
Johansson spoke to Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday at the AMFAR annual New York gala. And sounded, well… totally normal.
“I have a lot of huge admiration for working moms. I don’t profess to know anything about parenting, anything more than anybody else, [but] being a working mom is an incredible challenge,” she said. “[I]t’s an incredible gift… [but] I think you always feel a little bit of guilt.”
She continued: “If you’re at work, you feel like you’re missing out on those special moments with your kid. If you’re with your kid, you feel like you’re not giving enough to your job.”
Johansson cites her own mom, Melanie Sloan, as her parenting role model. She even brought her mom with her to the AMFAR gala. We felt emoji hearts dancing over our heads listening to Johansson’s words about her.
“I really couldn’t think of anybody else that I’d rather [have] with me here tonight. [She’s] been incredibly inspiring for me in many, many ways, but certainly as a young girl.”
Can we have a paint and sip party with Johansson? Can somebody arrange that? Scarlett, you can totally bring your mom too.
