Love & Hip Hop star's baby name gives her a lot to live up to
Rapper and reality TV alum Nya Lee has been documenting her pregnancy with gorgeous pictures ever since she first announced her pregnancy two months ago, to the surprise and delight of her fans. Now she's dropped another huge bomb on her following. Her baby is here, and the name mom Nya chose for her new addition is one that's sure to give her a leg up: Winner.
Baby Winner was born yesterday afternoon, and Lee hit Instagram to gush about her new daughter and how excited she is to star in a brand-new role: the one of "mom."
The reality TV star and former dancer has been incredibly hush-hush about the details of her pregnancy ever since she initially made the surprise announcement that she was expecting, promising to reveal all in an interview with former cast mate Yandy Smith-Harris. We're still waiting for the interview, but in the meantime, we're thrilled that Lee has at least shared her daughter's name. Winner is a unique moniker for a baby born into a unique family, and she'll have plenty of good company. The trend of traits or characteristics as names unto themselves is one that's been steadily picking up speed for a while now.
Take the increasing popularity of names like Queen, Empire and True, for instance. All are less-than-common names that describe traits parents hope their kids will have or describe the adoration they already have for their infant sons and daughters. It's clear that Lee is certainly smitten with her new addition. The name Winner, which means "a victorious person," could speak to the hope we all have for our kids — that they'll face whatever challenges they encounter in life head-on and emerge triumphant.
She's also not the only celeb to give a word pride of place on a birth certificate. Consider Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, moms who chose Blue and North, respectively, to make sure their daughters stood out among a sea of already uniquely named celebrity babies.
As for the name Winner, it looks like Lee is taking full advantage of another baby name trend as well: keeping traditionally gender-specific names fluid. While Winner falls outside of the top 1,000 baby names, it is a name we've seen before, usually for baby boys. We've already seen an influx of parents picking traditionally male names for their little girls, further blurring gender lines.
Considering that Lee has made a name for herself in an industry that's typically been a man's world, it's no surprise that she would go against gender expectations with her daughter's on-trend name too.
Congratulations to Nya Lee and her sweet new bundle of joy. We're looking forward to that interview too!
