Newsflash: New moms need to eat. In fact, it’s really important that they do, in order to give them the energy required for around-the-clock care of a newborn. But it seems some people think moms should give up everything for their baby. Because food, fresh air and contact with other adults are luxuries only to be enjoyed by non-parents, right?
Apparently so — at least according to the people who have slammed Chrissy Teigen for her latest parenting decision. Brace yourselves… you’ll never guess what she did.
She went out for dinner (with her husband John Legend) and left 1-week-old daughter Luna at home. Now, we don’t know who was looking after the baby. It could have been a nanny or her granny. That doesn’t matter to the Parenting Police — boy, are they raging.
The choice comments left in response to photos of Teigen and Legend out in public include such gems as, “Who wants to leave a one-week-old baby to go to a bar?” and “She’s hitting the streets already???? Damn these so called celebrities want to show off so bad after giving birth. Spend bonding time with your baby and not let the nanny or babysitter raise them!”
But our favorite has to be, “I just wanted to hold and stare at my children when they were born.”
If Teigen is anything like the rest of us, she’ll have spent the entire date thinking and talking about baby Luna. Heading out without your newborn, even just for a couple of hours, is a little like going out without shoes on. It feels strange and uncomfortable and makes you want to turn around and head back home.
But it’s so important for new moms (and dads) to have time away from their little one. Life with a newborn is all-encompassing and can be completely overwhelming. Occasional periods of separation are good for Mom and Baby. Moms need time to relax and regroup, whatever form that takes. Some moms might meditate, some might take a bath and read a book, and some might pop out for dinner with their friend or partner.
Teigen is fast becoming one of our favorite celebrity moms. She buys herself a perineal irrigation bottle as a push present. She talks about wearing diapers after giving birth. And she takes all the criticism and judgment (welcome to motherhood) in stride, replying to a tweet asking, “How’s baby Luna?” with this:
