Kelly Clarkson drops a pregnancy bombshell
Kelly Clarkson's been busy.
Not only is she the frazzled mom of a 1-year-old daughter and a talented singer on tour, but Clarkson is pregnant again with baby number two — a secret she let slip out to her fans at her Los Angeles concert on Wednesday night.
Leave it to a pregnant lady to barely be able to contain her excitement as soon as she started singing a heartfelt song that related to parenting. Kelly reportedly teared up as she sang her 2015 megahit to the crowd, "Piece by Piece." After singing touching lyrics like, "She will never have to wonder her worth. Because unlike you, I'm gonna put her first," the newly pregnant pop star confessed to her fans, "I'm totally pregnant."
Clarkson said that while she hoped to wait to officially announce the news to friends and family before dropping the bomb on the rest of the world, she just couldn't help herself. "I was crying, and I didn't want you to think I was crazy," she told her fans.
The 33-year-old American Idol superstar has never made any bones about the fact that she wanted babies, babies and more babies. After marrying Brandon Blackstock, Reba McEntire's stepson, in 2013, the couple welcomed their daughter River Rose Blackstock on June 12, 2014. If you do the math, this means Kelly's daughter is only 14 months old, so there's potential for her kids to be just shy of two years apart.
As if we needed a reason to love her more, Kelly made the impromptu pregnancy announcement that much more adorable. Almost every barely pregnant woman has been there before — you're bursting at the seams because you just found out you're sharing your body with a baby, and somehow you're supposed to keep the secret to yourself until it's "safe" enough to tell. Oh, yeah, and let's not forget that your body has suddenly been overtaken by pregnancy hormone invaders. As we saw with Kelly, it's almost impossible to keep your cool when the sentimental stuff makes you cry at the drop of a hat.
Most doctors (and parenting websites) will tell you that it's safe to announce your pregnancy when the first trimester has passed since the risk of miscarriage drops significantly after 12 weeks. There's no telling how far along Kelly is (since she's not even showing yet), though she did make it clear that she didn't plan on spilling the beans this early — apologizing to her husband for her emotional reaction on stage.
This begs the question: Is it OK to announce your pregnancy so soon? Kelly was open about the fact that she had a "horrible" pregnancy with her first baby, even resulting in hospitalization. Announcing a pregnancy this early on, especially with a track record like Kelly's, can be risky. But let's not forget, she's been around the block before. She already has a beautiful daughter and knows what a rigorous pregnancy and birth look like. Though this news slipped out early (probably spurred on by those pesky pregnancy hormones), we couldn't be happier for Kelly.
Sharing her big news early has its benefits: Now Kelly doesn't have to come up with an excuse to take an extra nap on the tour bus.
