Shakira and her boyfriend, Gerard Piqué, welcomed their second son together. The Colombian singer announced his “warrior”-inspired name and shared the strong meaning behind it.
Shakira announced the arrival of her baby boy and his name on her social media accounts.
The 37-year-old singer explained that the name Sasha is of “Greek and Russian descent” and means “defender of mankind” and “warrior.”
The Social Security Administration keeps track of the popularity of baby names here in the United States and doesn’t rank it in the top 1,000 for boy names in the last five years. However, it does rank at number 428 for girls.
Shakira joins a handful of other celebrities who picked the name Sasha for their sons. Chris Hemsworth has a twin son named Sasha, while Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber also have a son with the name. Jerry Seinfeld has a daughter with this name but spells it Sascha.
Gender-bending baby names are the hottest trend to hit Hollywood. For example, Paulina Gretzky and Dustin Johnson just named their son Tatum, while Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher named their daughter Wyatt.
We are also seeing powerful boy names climbing the charts. In addition to Shakira’s “warrior” name, Kelly Rowland named her son Titan, while Kourtney Kardashian picked the royal-sounding name of Reign for her son.
It is also interesting to note that Sasha’s last name is Mebarak, which is Shakira’s maiden last name, while Gerard’s last name, Piqué, is the middle name. Traditionally, at least here in the U.S., the dad’s last name is also the last name of the baby. Kudos to Shakira for shaking up the system!
We can’t wait to see the first photos of Sasha — if he looks anything like their son Milan, he will be adorable. Piqué’s father gave some insight on the tot’s looks to Hello! magazine.
“They’ve told me he looks like Gerard,” he said. “[Their first son] Milan looked like Shakira when he was born, but this one looks more like his father.”
