A close-knit Australian community is in shock after the death of eight children ranging from 18 months old to 15 years old.
A 20-year-old man arrived home to find seven of his siblings and another child dead in their home. Police were called to the scene, where they found a 34-year-old woman suffering multiple stab wounds. The woman, who authorities say is the mother of seven of the children, is cooperating with police while being evaluated and treated at the hospital.
As word gathered, neighbors and relatives surrounded the property in Cairns, a region of Queensland. A memorial was quickly erected as those who knew the family grieved for the lives of the eight children believed to be stabbed to death.

No suspect is being held in the case, prompting speculation that the mother may have somehow been responsible for the deaths of the children. Despite speculation, police have said it is too early in the investigation to know what happened to the eight children found dead. They promise a thorough investigation.
In the meantime, a community is left picking up the pieces and wondering how the lives of so many innocent children could be cut short in such a brutal way.
