Kelly Rowland welcomed a healthy baby boy yesterday with her husband, Tim Witherspoon. Get all the details on her first child, including her unique (and tough-sounding) baby name.
Rowland welcomed son Titan Jewell Witherspoon yesterday, who weighed in at 7.5 pounds.
“We are thrilled to announce that today we are the proud parents of our first son,” she said in a statement to People. “We are blessed to report everyone is healthy and happy!”
What is behind the name Titan? Rowland hinted in August that they were considering a family name. “The dad picked out the name. It has to do with family,” she said.
The name Titan is an unusual one, with the Social Security Administration’s baby name database ranking it as 908 in the top 1,000 names of the year. (Jacob was the most popular name.) It has gone up slightly in popularity, as the year before it was ranked at 960.
Perhaps she was looking to the stars for inspiration? Titan is the name of Saturn’s largest moon. In fact, it is the most Earthlike world we have found, because of its dense atmosphere and evidence of surface liquid.
Rowland could have also found her baby name inspiration by looking back at Greek mythology. The Titans were beings that descended from primordial gods. The name does have a tough and powerful sound to it.
Prior to Titan’s birth, Rowland showed off her baby bump in a nude photo shoot. “It’s really — I won’t say amazing — it’s Godmazing watching your body carry a human,” she said. “I took a birthing class and I was amazed by all the things this woman was saying to me about birthing and what the body does naturally. Why wouldn’t you want to celebrate that?”
The Destiny’s Child alum also revealed she is planning to start a boy’s clothing line — after she basks in the glow of her newborn son. “I’m excited to bring a child into the world, and sharing that experience with my husband is probably the most beautiful part,” she said.
