All mothers serving in the military deserve our gratitude and support, but some have taken on a task that’s difficult even in the best situations. In each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, new moms continue pumping and nursing despite juggling the responsibilities of active duty.
Robyn Roche-Paull wrote Breastfeeding in Combat Boots and founded the accompanying site as a hub for breastfeeding military moms. She began breastfeeding while on active duty in the U.S. Navy and served for six years overseas and stateside. As a lactation consultant, Roche-Paull supports breastfeeding and pumping moms in and out of the armed services.
The Breastfeeding in Combat Boots Facebook page has become a gathering place for new moms seeking support and advice while trying to feed their babies when serving our country at the same time. The community helps moms figure out everything from how to balance pumping sessions and workouts and how to wear a nursing tank under a military uniform.
Roche-Paull encourages military moms to share photos like these — testaments to the tenacity of amazing military moms working toward breastfeeding goals.
