Did you know you can bake brownies in a hollowed-out orange? It’s fun and flavorful.
Chocolate and orange is a great pair — the sweetness and acidity of orange complements the rich, slight bitterness of chocolate beautifully. These brownie oranges are a creative way to combine these two flavors with a fun presentation.
Serves 8 to 10
- 1 box brownie mix (for 8-inch-by-8-inch or 9-inch-by-9-inch pan), plus any ingredients required to make the mix (or make your own brownies from scratch)
- 8 to 10 oranges, washed
- Cut off a small sliver of the bottom of each orange, less than 1/8-inch, so they easily sit upright. Cut off the tops of each orange, enough so you can see past the peel, about 1/2-inch. Use a paring knife to cut around the inside of the peel to loosen the orange pulp, and then use a spoon to scoop out the pulp. It’s okay if some of the orange remains attached to the peel.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Make the brownie mix as instructed on the package. Fill each orange about halfway with the brownie batter and move to a baking sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes longer than the box directs, or about 40 minutes, to cook the brownies all the way through. Reduce baking time to about 30 minutes for a molten lava cake center. Cool slightly before eating.
