Sex, as seen on television, is not entirely uncommon or verboten these days. In fact, we've come a long way since the advent of TV in the mid-20th century, especially when it comes to talking about and showing sex. But curiously, one of the aspects of sex we're still not seeing too much of (which makes it all the more exhilarating when we do see it) is the use of sex toys as they relate to the sexual health and wellness of the characters in question.
In the last 20-ish years, however, there have been some more notable examples of the use of sex toys in television shows, from vibrators to strap-ons to the unconventional toys, that are worth talking about. Interestingly, sex toys are used by multiple genders, queer characters, straight characters, characters of varying ages and characters involved in different kinds of relationships.
As seen on TV, sex toys have become another love language, a way to express love and fulfill desires and meet the sexual needs of a particular character without shaming them or erasing who they are as a person. Just seeing sex toys and aids on our favorite shows helps to destigmatize them and make them a normal part of the sexual conversation. And thankfully, we've moved past the days when seeing a vibrator on-screen was shorthand for a sad, lonely single woman. In short, TV is doing right by sex toys.
So which shows notably destigmatize sex toys for their viewers and send the message that they should be embraced? Keep reading and find out for yourself.
