5 Steps to a better social life
If you’re feeling like you don’t have enough friends in your life lately, you’re likely not alone. As we get older (and responsibilities pile up), maintaining friendships and meeting new people get harder.
But there are a few ways to rev up your social life that don’t require a ton of time. We’ve listed a few of our favorites.
Start something fun
One of the easiest ways to improve your social life is to take initiative. Rather than wait for someone to text or call about seeing a movie or going for drinks, step up to the plate and initiate plans. Host a cocktail party, gather some friends for an impromptu game night or challenge your BFFs to a weekly walking date to boost fitness and fit in fun.
Join something fun
If you want to meet new people and have a good excuse to get out of the house, we suggest joining a club or a team. Think about what you like to do and what you’d like to learn. Then get online or ask around at work and among friends to see what’s available in your area. From sports teams to hiking clubs, there’s bound to be a group of like-minded people you can join.
Make your social life a priority
It’s so easy to just let friendships fade and your social life take second (or third) place to your job, family and spouse or boyfriend. But if you really want to enhance your social life, you need to prioritize it. Make a point to call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, make plans with people you don’t see often and set aside at least three days every month where you do something social, whether it’s a dinner date or just a quick coffee.
Boost existing bonds
We all take close friendships for granted sometimes and assume the people we’ve known longest will always be there, but these relationships can also benefit from more effort. Why not call your oldest and dearest friend and plan a summer road trip? Get your college BFFs together for a night on the town or figure out a way to see your closest friends more often. The more you make an effort, the more others will, too.
Just say yes
Think back to how many times you’ve declined offers for drinks, dinners out or other social events. Chances are, there have been at least a few, which can easily become a habit. Let’s face it; after a long day at work, we all crave the couch, but too many nights in can sabotage your social life. The more you say no, the less people invite you anywhere. Rather than give in to the temptation to stay in, say yes to the next invite – and make that a habit.
