It seems like every one of my single girlfriends has hooked up with a man this past month and it made me wonder: what happens during the months of June, July, and August that makes people so lustfully hot?
“Summer lovin’ happened so fast,” croons Olivia Newton-John in Grease. And it’s true.
“The heat just makes you want to grab the cute guy next to you and make out,” says Elizabeth, 22, of Long Island, NY.
However, according to certified sexuality educator and founder of sexedsolutions.com Amy Levine, there is a more scientific explanation.
“An increase in libido begins with spring fever when we come out of winter hibernation, and tends to boost as mid-June approaches,” explains Levine. “Two of the main factors [why one’s libido increases] are that body image and self-esteem usually peak at this time, especially for those who are proud to show some skin during swimsuit season.”
Another reason for our increased sex drives may be because we are generally more social during the warmer months. In New York City, for example, there are literally hundreds of free events that take place, giving women more opportunities to meet potential lovers than during the wintertime, when faced with icy temperatures, they’re more likely to stay home.
In addition, “Wearing less layers is suggestive of what someone looks like naked,” notes Levine. “Adding a dose of erotic imagination and you have all the fixin’s for a hot summer fantasy that will get the juices flowing.”
For some, a hot summer fantasy may include sex in the great outdoors. And while the potential for being caught (and possibly arrested) may deter some, for others looking to recreate the beach scene from Here to Eternity, it only seems to boost the adrenaline coursing through their veins.
If you find yourself among the latter, here a few tips to keep in mind to make your outdoor escapade satisfying and memorable:
For starters, foreplay should begin before you select a spot to do the deed.
“Show some PDA by making out as you walk down the street or sharing in erotic detail what you want to do to each other when you leave the restaurant,” advises Levine.
Then, when your engines are revved up, quickly find a discreet spot, try to be as quiet as possible, and enjoy one of summer’s most steamiest pleasures.
