Did you know that today is National Mustard Day? It seems that there’s a “national” day for just about everything. Celebrate this one by making homemade mustard.

The main ingredient in mustard is mustard seeds. You can collect these from a flowering mustard plant in your garden or buy them online or in a grocery store. In addition to mustard, you’ll need water, lemon juice, flour, sugar, salt, garlic and tumeric. If you want to make a specialty mustard, you may also want to add honey, vinegar, white wine or beer.

Start by adding a few tablespoons of lemon juice to about one cup of water. Then add in about 6 tablespoons of mustard seed. Let the mixture sit overnight and then put the mixture into a food processor. Add 1/2 cup of flour, a few garlic cloves and one tablespoon each of salt, powdered sugar and turmeric. Blend in the food processor for until everything is thoroughly mixed, about three minutes. Add any extra ingredients, such as the honey, vinegar or beer and blend until incorporated.

Enjoy your homemade mustard and National Mustard Day!
