Achieve spring’s beauty trends for less

I love to scour the runways of New York Fashion Week for beauty trends. Spring is one of my favorite seasons because no matter what year it is, there are always lively trends to enjoy. This spring brought smoky eyes, dark brows and bright streaks of hair. Try one or try them all — while saving your pennies.

The soft, sultry eye

Diane Von Furstenberg sultry eyes

The smoky eye comes, goes and morphs with the seasons. On the spring runways of Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam and Diane Von Furstenberg, we saw subtle grays, khakis and bronzes; while Herrera and Lam focused the smokiness above the eye, DVF featured the smokiness below, which was a fresh, sexy twist.

Get the sultry eye look

To get the look: Use a soft shimmering pencil, like the Eye Crayons ($8) from Ulta. Try the Smoke Signals (gray), Rich (khaki)  and Cocoa Puff (bronze) for this pretty look. Apply generously along the upper and/or lower lash line, buff out with the sponge tip, add a dramatic mascara like the NYX Fly With Me Mascara ($12), and voila!

Attention-grabbing brows

Marc Jacobs brows

In keeping with the previous two seasons, brows continue to be full, dramatic and almost bushy (with the exception of Donna Karan and Rodarte, who showed very pale, bleached brows). I particularly liked the defined, pretty brows at Rag & Bone, Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu.

Get the look

To get the look: First fill in the brow with a pencil that is one shade darker than your natural hair color. Then set the brows in place with a gel. You can knock out both steps with one product: Revlon’s Brow Fantasy Pencil & Gel ($7).

A mischievous streak

Oscar de la Renta's hair streak

I was very excited to see fun, colorful streaks in models’ hair on Peter Som and Oscar de la Renta runways this season. I have secretly admired the bright streaks of several pop stars (while trying to ignore their overabundance of makeup and oversharing of cleavage), so to see the streaks making an appearance in high fashion confirmed that those girls are onto something.

Get the look

To get the look: Have fun! Experiment with brightly-colored clip-ins like the Design Lengths Snap It! Clip-in Hair Extensions in red, blue, purple or pink ($13) from Sally Beauty. Wear it loose and beachy like the Som models or in an elegant chignon a la de la Renta.
