Designing duo Max and Lubov Azria are not only business partners in BCBG Max Azria and Herve Leger by Max Azria… they’re also husband and wife!
We caught up with the power pair who brought us the famed bandage dress backstage during their New York Fashion Week shows to learn how they live, love and work together.
SheKnows: How is it working so closely with your significant other?
Lubov Azria: Max’s office is on the other side of the building, so we really just meet for lunch. In all seriousness, I think we have an immense level of respect for each other. Max is a visionary, and I’m detail-oriented. We’re each other’s support and love, and that’s why we make a great team.
SK: You and Max have six kids total! What’s your favorite part of being a mom?
LA: Oh my gosh, getting all the love!
SK: What was your inspiration for the latest collection?
LA: The collection was inspired by my trip to Istanbul last September, and I love all the history and beauty inlaid in the walls in Istanbul. So I took a bunch of pictures, came back home and just started being inspired.
SK: You have two shows this week: BCBGMAXAZRIA and Herve Leger. How are you surviving Fashion Week?
LA: Drinking a lot of water, staying positive, meditating and keeping moisturized.
SK: Do you still get nervous before a show?
Max Azria: Always, like it’s the first time. Definitely!
SK: What’s been your proudest moment so far?
LA: So many, I can’t just mention one! I think looking at my husband, when he used to walk out by himself and our team and the amazing work that they do. I think it’s every time when I see all the looks lined up and all the 25 girls lined up, I just want to cry.
SK: How would you describe the style of your brand?
MA: Freedom, freedom, freedom! Freedom to wear what you want the way you want. The most important part for every piece of clothing is that they fit very well, and after that, it’s about attitude and mixing the different textures, lines and style.
SK: When did you know you made it as a designer?
MA: When the customers buy my clothes. They’re putting their money on the table so you have to be honest.
SK: What’s one fashion rule that should be broken?
LA: Every rule should be broken. I think that’s how you create and innovate.
SK: Why do you think so many places have copied the Herve Leger bandage dress?
MA: Because we are good!
