Stripes are one of the hottest trends this summer — here are a few tips to help you pull off the look!
Stripes are hot this summer and they can also be intimidating. Sure, they look great on the runway, but how can you pull off that look without looking like a clown? Here are five easy ways to keep your striped look chic.
When in doubt, add an accessory! If you aren’t quite ready to wear stripes head to toe, you can take baby steps by accenting your outfit with jewelry like this Come Full Circle Idiom Bangle ($58) from Kate Spade. Or try a scarf like this Juicy Couture Chevron Striped scarf ($47) from Piperlime. And you could even try to throw on a pair of striped shoes like these TOMS Beacon Striped Espadrille Slip-On Shoes ($78) at Neiman Marcus.
The sexy mini
Stripes look best really long or short. Try a sexy mini dress with broad or narrow horizontal stripes to make you look taller. This will look great paired with some flat sandals and minimal jewelry. Long sleeves on a short dress also lengthen your legs, so the flat sandals are a must. We love this Shoulder Pad Stripe Mini Dress from Revolve Clothing ($66)!
The maxi dress
The Maxi looks so chic and effortless with broad horizontal stripes, but you’ll want to stay away from vertical stripes as they will make you look wider. Broader stripes are your best bet on the maxi because smaller stripes tend to look busy. Pair with neutral and understated accessories to avoid taking away from the stripes. These are some of our favorite go-to maxi dresses to throw on for a quick and easy look: Soft Jole Dress — Diedra Striped Maxi Dress in a navy and pink stripe (shown above) from Bloomingdales ($148) and the Tank Striped Maxi Dress in gray with black stripes from Piperlime ($195).
While dresses look better with horizontal stripes, shirts look better with vertical stripes. With the flowy shirts in season, pair a loose-fitting neutral blouse with vertical stripes with bright colored jeans for an instantly chic and fashionable outfit. Wear a delicate gold or silver necklace with brightly colored studs to complement the outfit. Here is a great neutral blouse we found at Piperlime, Francoise Stripe Silk Blouse ($238). You could also pair a loose-fitting, boldly colored blouse or tank with a pair of white jeans or pants.
The maxi skirt
The maxi skirt just may turn into your go-to piece for the summer. Throw on a skirt with small horizontal stripes with a plain tee for an instant casual chic look. Try pairing with a bold statement necklace and a pair of flat sandals. This Striped Column Maxi Skirt from Express ($50) pairs great with a plain white T-shirt, throw a blazer on over top with a solid colored scarf for work or just stick with the T-shirt for a casual weekend look. This Jessica Simpson Striped A-Line Maxi from Macy’s ($27) is great for the beach!
Have fun with the stripes this summer, just remember to not pair them with any other prints.
