Step 1: Use plaidplaid tablecloth

Nothing says “summer” like the grid-on-grid print of plaid! Use it as the start of your decor to turn your table into a natural focal point. Find a plaid print in bright, festive colors, like this tablecloth from Kohl’s, or choose a print in classic reds and blues. The playful lines will draw attention right where you want it!

Step 2: Get creative with napkinsbandanas

Put your white linens away — you won’t need them for this outdoor table setting. Instead, let the spirit of summer inspire you with bolder choices. For a creative napkin option, try bandanas in various colors, like these from For an added impact, roll each bandana and then tie with twine, or fold the bandana in a creative way.

Step 3: Quench their thirst

Keep your guests from getting thirsty by using Mason jars as glasses. Tie ribbons around the rim of each jar or use a rubber band to attach a small flower. You could even wrap each jar with yarn to add a pop of color to your table. Coordinate the color of your string with your tablecloth and napkins to create a cohesive look. If you’re running short on time, you can order pre-crafted mason jars from various vendors on

Step 4: Add flowers

For a simple summer centerpiece, head to the garden section of your local home improvement store. Potted plants are a great way to brighten up your table without overspending. Daisies, petunias and brown-eyed susans are great summer blooms, and best of all, you can enjoy these flowers in your garden even when you’re not entertaining. Or use silk options, like these gerbera daisies from Crate and Barrel, for blooms that last all year.

Step 5: Add some sparkle

When the sun goes down, light up the table with some floating candles, like these from Place them around your centerpiece for an added glow. Use vases of varying heights for dimension and appeal, but don’t stop with the table — light walkways, patio columns and other areas your guests will see throughout the night. You may also use lanterns or luminaries to keep your get-together bright.
