Prom skin care countdown: Perfect your complexion for the big day

You found the dress, your shoes are totally swoon-worthy and everyone will be in awe of your accessories, but none of that counts if you don’t have the clear, glowing complexion to match. To help you put your best face forward, we put together a skin care guide aimed at getting your complexion prom-ready in no time.

Up your H2O quotient

Water is your new best friend. Ditch the cola, cut back on coffee and trade any other sugary or caffeine-laden drink for water. Even being just a little bit dehydrated can cause skin to look lackluster – and don’t you want a radiant complexion for prom? Of course you do, which is why you’ll start carrying around a reusable water bottle (get one in a fun, bold hue or pattern) and sip, sip, sip all day. Getting in the hydration habit now will ensure skin looks fabulous on prom night.

Be a detox diva

Start the day with one mug of warm water with the juice of half a lemon before eating anything. This will help your body start the day off right and help flush out toxins from your system, which is another important factor in keeping skin clear and healthy. Other ways to help cleanse your system include limiting sugar, sodium and processed foods and eating a lot more leafy greens and colorful fruit and veggies.

Be sun smart

While it might not be beach or pool weather yet, it’s still important to be aware of how much sun you’re getting and wear sunscreen daily even though we’re not quite in the throes of summer. Overexposure to the sun can cause lots of problems – from premature aging to skin cancer, not to mention you don’t want to be dealing with a burn on the day before prom. Find a face-specific product in a light texture and wear daily.

Teen exercisingGet moving

Exercise is a great way to not only boost your mood and put your health first (important at any age), but it’s also beneficial to your complexion. That’s right, going for a jog, hitting they gym or playing sports can help skin look healthy and radiant due to a boost in circulation.

Butt out

Not only can lighting up cause heart disease and cancer, smoking wreaks havoc on your complexion by restricting blood flow to the skin. It can also cause skin to be sallow, dull and pale, and can also cause premature wrinkles and fine lines. We suggest taking this opportunity to quit while you’re ahead.

Enjoy healthy fats

While it may be tempting to go on a fat-free diet leading up to prom, totally eliminating fats from your diet isn’t good for skin. You’ll end up looking pale and tired instead of radiant. To keep skin luminous, add some good fats to your diet. Olive or flax oil, fish, raw nuts and seeds and avocado are some of the items full of good fats that benefit both your health and your skin.

Watch: Prom for all!

The cost of going to prom can really add up… tickets, limo ride, flowers, and of course, the dress. Donate your gently worn formal dresses so that everyone can have an awesome prom. Hayden Panettiere is donating hers!
