Beauty expert Jemma Kidd talks spring beauty

Here at SheKnows we have spring fever! Yes, we know it’s not quite here yet, but we can’t help but get excited for what’s to come on the beauty and style horizon. To help get even more in the mood for next season, we turned to beauty expert and makeup maven Jemma Kidd. She shares her insight into what’s hot for warmer weather beauty.

Neons are back this spring so it’s time to have fun with bold color, Kidd says. “Dare to be bold by trying a bright orange eyeshadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Neon Orange.” Here’s how:

  1. Starting at the inner tear duct, apply across the lid and blend upwards towards the brow, stopping just short of the brow bone.
  2. At the outer corners, sweep the eyeshadow out and upwards to the end of the brow to create a wing shape.
  3. Finish this look with a light coating of brown mascara to define the upper lashes. Keep lips natural and nude to avoid an ’80s revival.

If you aren’t feeling quite that daring, then let your lips do the talking, Kidd advises. “Striking lip color can be difficult to carry off so choose your hue carefully. Tomato reds and electric fuchsias look chic on pale, pared-back skin, while warm corals and neon oranges will bring out the golden tones in darker complexions,” she says. “My JK Lip ID is an ingenious product as it changes color depending on your pH balance, and therefore helps you to pick what shades best suit you.”

Seasonal beauty updates

Still sticking with the same makeup look season after season? It’s time for an update, says Kidd. “For each season, different environmental factors will drastically alter how you apply your makeup, as well as the skin regimen you have in place,” she explains. “In the spring and summer, protecting your skin from the sun with an SPF is key, but aside from that, a natural look is the name of the game. Heavy products can leave skin looking greasy and will slide, crease and melt in the heat.”

Jemma’s fave makeup looks for spring

Kidd tells us she loved the tonal looks that ran the runways for spring 2012. If you decide to shy away from the neon brights, you can still stay on-trend, she says. “Makeup is monochromatic with just a touch of earthy blush across cheekbones and creamy, nude lips, which is very natural and flattering on everyone.”

Other than that, modern matte faces are a must, the makeup expert advises. But matte doesn’t have to mean flat. “Use creams and powders with matte finishes to highlight and contour the face to give the illusion of A-lister cheekbones. Avoid a retro rehash by keeping textures ultra-modern to complement a semi-matte complexion with high-shine lips for an up to date take on nudes.”
