Jeannie Mai relays winter fashion trends that will last

Professional stylist and host of Style Network’s How Do I Look? Jeannie Mai talked trends for winter that will keep you stylish all the way into spring — no hold up. Here are Mai’s style tips for the holiday season and beyond.

Mix, not match

One of the items on Jeannie’s winter trend hit list is mixing bold patterns that may have been deemed incompatible in the past. “Polka dots and stripes [do] work well together,” she argues.

What is wearapy?

“Wearapy is my belief that the colors and textures that you choose to wear can manipulate the mood and the situation you want to have,” explained Jeannie.

To overcome the holiday slump using wearapy, inject citrus colors into your oufit to create a more vigorous energy around yourself.

“If you want to kick a new energy into the office for 2012, then wear crisp whites or beige.”

She also suggests mixing bold floral patterns with light floral patterns.

“You can actually create your own eclectic look.”

It’s a viable tip for staying trendy well past winter, given the marriage of floral prints and spring style.

Her one rule for getting this trend right? Make sure you play down the accessories and allow the patterns to make a strong statement on their own.

Wear statement rings

When SheKnows sat down with Jeannie, she was up in arms about wearing statement rings. “You can’t get enough of statement rings,” Jeannie said, advising you to pile them on for the holidays and then scale back when it’s time to rock a lighter, springtime style.

One finger trinket she currently has eyes for is The Lucky Star ring by Eszti.

“This ring has a really beautiful Champagne tone to it that complements any skintone,” she said.

Jeannie’s stamp of approval says this dud will become one of your favorite season-friendly accessories. Make sure it’s one of your picks when it comes to decking out your hands in holiday style, while also keeping it in mind for the days of April showers.

Rock the coat

An area Jeannie deems worth the splurge is jackets. The two must-haves: the trenchcoat and the capelet.

“The trenchcoat I love just because every woman has a waist and you never wanna waste a waist,” Jeannie smirked. Karen Millen is the label she loves. “Karen Millen makes gorgeous jackets that nip and tuck just in that perfect, smallest area of your ribcage.”

This is ideal for when you’re dressing up and also for when you’re trying to rock the look, even when you’re dressed down.

As for the capelet, Jeannie commented, “It creates a different section of your body so that you can play off those long legs with leggings, or jeans, or skinnies or even high boots that you happen to own.”
