Winter skin care tips for dry climates

With the winter holidays comes dry winter skin. There are certain types of treatments that you can use to prevent the dry climate from sucking all the moisture out of your skin. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Director Lisa Rowland gave us some tips on how to stay moisturized.

Layer with serum

Rowland recommends layering with a nutrient-rich serum as a good way to keep your skin moisturized during the winter months. “Using a nutrient-rich serum underneath your moisturizer, or a rich cream, will keep your skin moisturized throughout the day,” Rowland says.

For oily skin

For oily skin types, Rowland suggests a balancing moisturizer that is meant for oily skin types because it’s lighter weight and prevents production of sebum (oil glands).

For dry skin

In the case of severely-dry skin, Rowland recommends a facial mist. “Moisturizing mists help throughout the day to get an extra added boost of moisture and so does a hydrating facial mist with no alcohol.”

Drink water, avoid harsh soap

Other than lotions and moisturizers, Rowland says additional ways to avoid dry skin during the winter are to drink lots of water and avoid harsh soaps. “Often, cleansers that foam a lot have a lot of harsh soap chemicals and will strip the skin.”

Exfoliation is key

In order to get rid of dry skin during the winter, Rowland says to try a humidifier in your bedroom at night. “I also recommend exfoliating on a regular basis, but not over-exfoliating. And make sure you moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower because your skin is still damp so it retains the moisture better,” Rowland says.

Try tinted moisturizer

When it comes to face makeup such as foundation, Rowland suggests using a tinted moisturizer as your foundation. “Using a tinted moisturizer will give you a nice, light coverage but will also moisturize at the same time. You definitely don’t want to replace your moisturizer with tinted moisturizer, but go through your daily face routine and then, instead of using regular foundation, use a tinted moisturizer.”

Dry skin during the winter will vary depending on the climate you’re in, but the main thing is to always moisturize daily, which can help keep wrinkles at bay later on.
