How to organize your closet

Have you ever torn apart your closet looking for a particular shoe only to find it days later somewhere else? Or how about opening your closet just to have a pile of clothes fall on your head? Closets are great when they’re organized, but when they are a mess, finding what you’re looking for can be a stressful experience.

Deciding you want to organize your closet is the easy part, but actually taking the first step is the challenge. Learn how to organize your closet with these simple steps:

Step 1: Start by taking everything out

Take every last shoe, piece of clothing, and sock out of your closet so you can start with a fresh slate. Taking inventory of what you have will allow you to see just how much work needs to be done. Toss anything from the last decade and beyond—and that heel that was never repaired, too.

Step 2: Evaluate what you need and donate the rest

The next step in figuring out how to organize your closet is subjective but essential. Determine what clothes have earned the right to stay in your closet by dividing them into three piles: what you wear often and love, what you wear sometimes and like a lot, and what you rarely wear and/or don’t like. The first two piles get to stay, but the third goes right to the donation bin.

Of the two keeper piles, try on everything. Your skinny jeans may have fit three years ago, but if they don’t fit now, why keep them? Once you’ve figured out what is staying and what is going, you can move on to the next step—putting everything back.

Step 3: Look into space saving systems

Organizing your clothes is a big task and, depending on the dimensions of your closet, you will have to be creative. Keep in-season clothes toward the front of your closet. If you have a small closet, store away last season’s wares in the basement or attic so they don’t take up valuable space.

Next, try to be versatile when it comes to making use of the space in your closet. Vertical shoe racks, utility hooks, and stackable containers are all ways to utilize space that will save you from chaos the next time you try to find something. Hang the shoe rack on the back of a door, put hats and belts on wall hooks, and keep jeans tucked away in clear plastic, easily stackable containers; don’t forget to label each container! If you keep shoes in boxes, label them so you know your boots from your ballet flats.

Having an organized closet no longer has to be a fantasy. Get started today and your wardrobe will thank you.
