“This is the season to be white hot!” says Sara Rogers, the trend specialist of the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. White looks pristine and fresh and is available in everything from apparel to accessories. One runway hit? The little white dress. Choices range from strapless to puffed sleeves in crisp cotton to eyelet lace.

Overall, dresses are big this season, from empire waists, wrap style, shirt dresses, cap sleeves, puffy sleeves, 3/4-length sleeves, classic sheath, trapeze, drop waist, mid-thigh length to hovering just around the knee.

Your time to shine

“Spice up any ordinary outfit with metallic. From shoes to handbags, shirts to skirts, metallic is hot for spring and summer ’07,” says Anna Goldstein, the publisher of “You can go for any price point, from Manolo Blahnik sandals to Havaiana flip flops. Let yourself shine and glimmer.”
But don’t overdo, says celeb designer Wayne Scot Lukas. “Spring and fall trends of metallics and patents are fun and exciting, but how many can wear that silver-mirrored dress and still look great? How many can wear those shiny silver or patent leather pants and still feel in shape? Not many people will be able to handle the trends,” says Lukas, former host of TLC’s What Not to Wear, celebrity fashion stylist and designer of LUKASTYLE (available on HSN and

His answer is to give a nod to the trends, simply and classically. “For example, metallics are very hot, so grab the latest metallic bag… or sandal or shoe.” He also notes that patent leather is huge, but you should do it, too, only in the bag or shoe, “then you can have a lot or a little of metallics or color and it will not be on your body.”

A rainbow of options

Need a splash of color? Primary colors will also be huge this year, says Lukas, “so try them in similarly inexpensive, small doses.”
“Saturated colors are replacing the neutrals and pale shades of spring,” agrees Cable & Gauge Design Director Michelle Antonelli. “Bright colors make people feel happy, and we hope our knitwear customers will enjoy cheering up their summer wardrobe.”

Prints are charming

Apparently, going wild and free is for more than jungle animals this spring. “This is the season to go wild with prints,” Sara Rogers says. Designers have given a nod to the 1960s and geometric prints abound. Fashionistas wanting to tap in on this look of the moment can express themselves in a variety of silhouettes, i.e. outerwear, dresses, jackets, tops, skirts and accessories.
Designers and manufacturers are continuing the trend of master-mixing fabrics, and this innovative design is often displayed on handbags and shoes. “I’ve noticed numerous styles of gorgeous geometric print handbags made of canvas, punctuated with patent leather, and also botanical print shoes crafted of canvas in a peep toe pump silhouette with a cork heel,” says Rogers.

And just when you thought Fleet Week wasn’t due back until fall, think again. “Stripes — vertical, horizontal and diagonal — are still living la Vida loca!” says Christina Carathanassis, owner of the wildly popular online designer resale boutique Christabelle’s Closet ( “Expect to see tons of striped patterns living on tank dresses, bubble skirts and shorts this season.”

For those hip mamas

A baby on the way is the best excuse of all to treat yourself to some fresh summer essentials. A Pea in the Pod, Mimi Maternity, and Motherhood have takes of their own on the trendy styles, including an adorable Crinkle Chiffon Print Dress at Motherhood Maternity and a sexy denim skirt at Mi

(Not) too sexy for your shirt Sexy is — as always — in. “For spring 2007, Shirley of Hollywood is going big into purple, soft pink, periwinkle, and the many different shades of these hot hues,” says Dana Schlobohm-Walczuk, Director of Design & Marketing at the Shirley of Hollywood ( lingerie line. “And for fall, bustiers will be hot for wearing out on the town, holiday parties and after-hours parties. Pair it with that little black suit, flirty skirt or mini and you have a look that is chic and can look great all night.” And for a little extra oomph, later this year, the company will be adding built-in bras and new fabrics to hug every curve.

“Corsets were strong back in my grandfather’s day, and they are even stronger now. We have a wide array of corsets and bustiers that are boudoir-sexy, or corsets that can be worn out on the town. Waist cinchers are another exciting trend that can also be used as a layer piece to dress up a rather boring outfit,” says Schlobohm-Walczuk.

If you don’t want to go all the way back to the 1800s for your fashion tips, how about trying the WWII era? “There are a lot of styles reminiscent of ’40s pinup girls,” says Rachel Fauman. “This is being seen in lacy fitted tops, rolled shorts, and high peep-toe heels.”
