And the Best Job in America Is…

Some dream of switching careers, while others are already employed at their dream job. But if you’re part of the former group and contemplating taking the leap into a different career, Glassdoor has just the list for you: the 50 Best Jobs in America for 2019. And the No. 1 job is likely one you’ve never considered before.

Glassdoor ranked jobs based on three factors: median base salary, job satisfaction and job openings. The top jobs run the gamut, too, from marketing manager and HR manager to occupational therapist and — topping the list — data scientist.

What exactly does a data scientist do, though? Well, if you’re an analytical thinker, this might be the job for you.

Data scientists, in short, gather large amounts of data, analyze that information and determine the best action plan or plans for various companies and organizations. In other words, it’s a job that requires a lot of brain power. It also pays very well, with the median base salary listed at $108,000. Current data scientists are happy with the position, too; on a scale of one to five, the job satisfaction averages at 4.3.

If that sounds like your kind of 9-to-5, then you’re in luck because, at the moment, Glassdoor reports over 6,500 data scientist job openings. According to Glassdoor, the number of job openings represents active job listings on its website as of Jan. 2.

Now, becoming a data scientist will take some serious work.

According to Get Educated, there are three general steps to nabbing the job. First, you should get a bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, math, physics or another related field. Then, you must earn a master’s degree in data or another related field; and, finally, gain experience in the field in which you’re most interested in working. Not an easy feat, but at least you’ll have a pretty heft salary waiting for you on the other side.

Nursing manager, marketing manager, occupational therapist, product manager, devops engineer, program manager, data engineer, HR manager and software engineer make up the rest of the top 10 best jobs list.
