If you want to up your “I woke up like this” selfie game, get some sleep

As an esthetician, I know how important it is to have healthy skin. It takes so much more than the creams and makeup we put on our face to really get that “healthy glow.” Whatever is going on in our bodies internally is exactly what our skin will look like. It’s time to look a little closer at what your skin might be trying to tell you. Here’s how I make sure I’m helping my skin feel and look the best it can.

1. Sleep might help clear toxins

Sleep is nourishment for your skin. It’s time for your skin to heal and rejuvenate. This will put the dark circles to rest and keep your skin looking fresh and nourished. In a study on mice, their brains removed 60 percent more toxins when they had a good sleep. I’ve found that sleep alone improves the health of my skin.

2. Food interferes with sleep

When I eat right before bed, it always keeps me from sleeping well. I imagine it’s because my body is focused on digesting rather than resting. I try and stay awake for at least 90 minutes after my last meal or snack.

3. Nighttime skincare routine is essential

Every night need is penciled in my calendar as my special skin care time. I’ve gotten into the habit of removing the impurities and oils from the day that rest on my face. If I don’t do this, I wake up with clogged pores and risk getting acne.

4. You’ll get fewer wrinkles

This alone should have you getting yourself to bed. Your skin produces collagen while sleeping. This is the amazing stuff that keeps your skin plump and youthful. When you miss too much sleep, you can get sagging and wrinkles in places you don’t want. Your skin will also look drier. So figure out how much sleep your body needs and stick to it as much as possible. Plus, who doesn’t like to sleep?

5. Sleep makes you happy

When I sleep enough, I tend to look happier overall. I smile and laugh more. When I’m tired and grumpy, that’s not the case. You will GLOW when you are getting the sleep your body needs.
