Much of the U.K. bore the brunt of flooding over the weekend, with four-legged creatures feeling the effects of the severe weather just as much as us.

A rowing club in Killorglin, Ireland, rescued a donkey stranded in deep flooding after Animal Heaven Animal Rescue put out a call for help on their Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.

In a desperate bid to save the donkey, Mike Fleming from the local rowing club agreed to launch a boat into the river. A rescue team then managed to secure a life buoy around the donkey’s neck and carefully tow him to dry land.
According to AHAR, the donkey found himself in his predicament after strong winds blew over a gate and a shed, allowing him to make a break for freedom.
The animal — who has been named Mike as a tribute to his rescuer — is now recovering at an animal shelter before going home to his owner.
“He is now dried with towels, eating a hot mash, all cosy and warm, and our vet has seen him and started him on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia”, said AHAR founder Suzanne Gibbons. “He has a small bit of fluid in one lung, but our vet said he will recover. All he needs is loads of tender loving care. He will be going back to his owner when he is better and recovered and when the floods are gone and his gate and fences are fixed”.
Ms Gibbons praised Mr Fleming for his willingness to help, describing him as a “hero” and saying, “He braved such dangerous water to help us save him”.
