8 Halloween costumes that represent powerful women

There was a time when I thought it was super fun and flirty to dress up as a sexy referee for Halloween.

Then, as chance would have it, I turned 19. If dressing up as a sexy anything brings your heart joy, then you should absolutely go for it. But if, by chance, your heart is set on a Halloween look that is a little more alpha woman than erotic plaything, then consider donning one of these outfits for a woman on a mission.

1. Jen Welter

Welter is the first woman coach of the NFL. Even though she’s only 5’2″ in a world of giants, she’s a spitfire linebacker coach and has already made a splash with the Arizona Cardinals. She doesn’t have an official costume for purchase, but you can totally wear a Cardinals tank and flex your biceps — people will know who you are. (Lady Fanatics, $34)

2. Beyoncé

Sure, you have to have some guts to put on a leather and lace bodysuit for a night on the town. This particular Beyoncé-inspired costume, however, nails the interplay of power and femininity that the pop star is known for. Go ahead and be your own Sasha Fierce. (Bonanza, $70)

3. Daenerys Targaryen

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you know the alpha appeal of monarch Daenerys Targaryen. She’s beautiful, powerful and navigates the transition from frightened girl to alpha woman like a champion. Wear her dothraki like the warrior woman you are. (Spirit of Halloween, $60)

4. Olivia Pope

Just grab any business blouse and pants or work dress already hanging in your closet, carry around a glass of wine and you’re done. It’s like getting ready for work, but you get to drink wine. So much better, right?

5. Katniss Everdeen

Any woman who can wield a bow and arrow like a boss is obviously an alpha woman. Wear this look with the high-heeled boots or not, but make sure to check your venue first to determine whether or not you can actually bring your archery gear with you. (, $42)

6. Rosie the Riveter

The Rosie costume hit its heyday last year, so update it for this year by looking a little more historically accurate than all the other women who will wear denim shirts and red headbands. You can’t go wrong with a little “we can do it,” woman-power attitude! (Candy Apple Costumes, $44)

7. Amelia Earhart

We’ll admit that this particular Amelia Earhart costume does no justice to the historical figure’s hips. But here’s the thing: Earhart was a badass who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She had more important things on her mind than her outfit. (Costumeish, $40)

8. Ronda Rousey

UFC champion Ronda Rousey is a rad female role model for 2015. No one can even touch her in the ring. Even though there doesn’t yet appear to be a Rousey costume for sale, you can totally don one of her UFC Rousey tees, some biker shorts and a pair of gloves to look just like the beast herself. (UFC, $34 for tee)

How do you plan to embrace your inner alpha woman this Halloween?
