The 75th annual Vanity Fair Best Dressed List raised a few eyebrows this week when it was revealed that sitting at the top was Samantha Cameron, the U.K.’s “First Lady” and Smythson creative consultant.
Hot on Sam Cam’s heels is Taylor Swift, with ballerina Misty Copeland, Amal Clooney and Rihanna ranking nos. 3, 5 and 6 respectively. There’s another surprise entry at no. 4: Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Further proof that conservative — with a small or capital “c” — style is here to stay?

Kate Middleton was named Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed in 2012 so we know the mag has a thing for elegant, reserved, upper-class British style. Sam Cam certainly has a covetable wardrobe (with Phillip Lim, Alexander McQueen, Erdem and Roksanda Ilincic nestling next to the Prime Minister’s suits — we imagine). Her look is classic but colourful and she loves a print. Her style isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but then nor is Rihanna’s.
“Of all the best-dressed lists, Vanity Fair’s is the most reliably deranged,” wrote Hadley Freeman in the Guardian this week. She may have a point. But aren’t all Best Dressed lists completely arbitrary? Who decides that Taylor Swift dresses better than Emma Watson or Sienna Miller? It’s all just a bit of fun and we’re sure Samantha Cameron is completely flattered — and just as surprised as everybody else.
