Feminist adult coloring book is girl power greatness
Adult coloring books are the latest trendy remedy for relieving life's stresses and engaging in something creative, so why not buy a coloring book that also celebrates feminism?
It’s a win-win for anyone who happens to be looking for a side order of girl power along with their creative outlet.
"Everyone loves to color. We never outgrow coloring," the artist and feminist behind the project, Ijeoma Oluo, says in her video explaining her Badass Feminist Coloring Book.
It started, for her, with coloring more-standard pictures of Barbie, but eventually she started making her own images to color.
"I started drawing people I love and respect because, let's face it, the world can be pretty sh***y sometimes, and adoringly painting the faces of friends really made me feel better," Oluo says.
Now she's launched a Kickstarter to publish her coloring book filled with images of badass feminists she admires, from Lindy West to Jenny Yang, and a few less-famous but no less badass feminists you might want to get to know.
Coloring has proven to be a therapeutic way for adults to turn off their brain and relieve stress and tension, and the adult coloring book segment of the publishing business has started to grow over the past couple of years. Now people looking for an adult coloring book to suit their particular taste have a feminist option to choose from thanks for Oluo.
The Badass Feminist Coloring Book already has 85 backers and has almost reached the project's goal of $4,000. And although the first round of books quickly sold out, don't worry. Oluo says she'll print as many as people want to buy. You have until July 14 to order yours, and it should be delivered sometime in August 2015.
Hey, you know what, Ijeoma? You're a pretty badass feminist yourself.
