Your style guide for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2015

One of the most memorable things about the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is the outrageous fashion. The countdown to parade night on March 7 is underway. Of course, if you are planning to attend, you have to be suitably dressed (or undressed) for the occasion. So we’ve dug out some of the fashion highlights from previous parades to give you inspiration to get into the festive spirit.

This is one way to embrace Aboriginal culture and crank it up a notch or two.

You could look fabulous in pride-coloured fur wraps.

Big, bold and in all the colours of the rainbow, you’ll stand out in the crowd if you wear an ensemble like this.

Delta Goodrem performed at last year’s Mardi Gras, so perhaps you could don something similar to her outfit if you don’t mind attracting the odd bee.

Kylie Minogue rocked Mardi Gras in 2012 and she looked like she proudly took her inspiration from a peacock.

Despicable Me-inspired
What better way to enjoy Mardi Gras than dressed as one of the most loveable cartoon characters — a minion.

These cute bunnies were making a statement about supporting cruelty-free lives for animals. Find something you’re passionate about and take your costume inspiration from there.

Vegas showgirl-inspired
Bring a little Las Vegas to the streets of Sydney with a flamboyant showgirl ensemble.

Get a little fruity and transform yourself into a banana.

By dressing up as a gift, you get to live in the present. Okay, that was a terrible pun, but it’s all we could think of.

The pink Daleks invaded last year’s parade to exterminate homophobia. Use your favourite sci-fi TV show for great costume ideas.

Rock glam-inspired

Big hair, makeup and black leather were fashion staples for ’80s rock bands like Poison and Kiss. Replicate the look and you’ll be able to rock the night away.

A little bit Vegas showgirl, a little bit court jester and a little bit clown: If you can’t decide what to dress up as, go for the eclectic look.

No Mardi Gras is complete without a little frosting, so deck yourself out to look glitter-tastic.
