Let’s face it, skin care is expensive (especially when you’re battling dry, flaky winter skin!). But don’t forget that there are things you can do to protect your skin that don’t involve horribly pricey, teeny tiny jars of anti-ageing cream. Here are 5 ways to take care of your skin this winter…for free!

Stay out of the sun
If you feel like your sunbathing sessions are leaving you with a healthy glow, think again. Your tan may look good in the short term but in the long term you’re going to be faced with wrinkles and age spots. And did we mention pigmentation? Melanoma? Yep, as well as guaranteeing that you’ll prematurely age, spending time in the sun comes with the added risk of skin cancer. If you absolutely have to be out in the sun, wear a hat and use sunscreen. And if you want a tan there are heaps of great tanning products out there that don’t come with premature ageing and health risks!
Exercise not only helps your body look great — it helps your skin too! When you sweat, it actually helps your body rid itself of toxins that can clog pores and cause blemishes. Just be sure to shower straight afterwards or you’ll undo all your skin’s good work! Just as importantly, exercise relieves stress, which we all know can wreak havoc on the best of complexions. Yep, that means you should battle those breakouts with exercise, not junk food! Best of all, exercise will give you a real healthy glow. This is because physical activity increases your blood flow, which in turns carries more oxygen to your skin, along with nutrients.
Drink plenty of water
Drinking water is the easiest way to give your skin a healthy glow. This is simply because drinking water keeps you (and your skin) hydrated, which reinvigorates your complexion as well as reducing the appearance of fine lines. So how much should you be drinking? It’s generally recommended that women drink around 2.2 litres of water per day. But this will vary depending on your age and lifestyle, and whether you’re pregnant. So if in doubt, ask your doctor.
Have a good-skin diet
Your diet affects your skin just as much as it does your waistline! If your diet is low in essential vitamins then your skin will naturally appear lacklustre. After all, your skin needs these nutrients just as much as the rest of your body. Eating the right foods can help improve your skin’s clarity, tone and texture. That’s why you should wave goodbye to processed, fatty and sugary foods and stock up on healthy skin foods like antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables and nuts as well as seafood (which is jam-packed with omega-3).
