Makeup and skin care by decade

How can we look glowing and radiant no matter what age we are? When it comes to makeup and skin care, not all types, shades and colours suit everyone, especially as we age. But we have you covered with these makeup and beauty tips.

What might look gorgeous on a 30-year-old woman might not be a good idea for a woman in her 50s and vice versa. So what’s best for you? We take a look at what methods and cosmetics are perfect for a woman at any age.

Ages 20–29

Between the ages of 20 and 30, your skin should be elastic and plump but you might still be experiencing acne and oily skin. Look out for cosmetics which have healing properties or are good for acne sufferers as this will help you avoid any more nasty breakouts. Keep hydrated, use a good moisturiser and a light mineral foundation to accentuate your natural features and avoid breakouts. A great foundation for sensitive skin is YoungBlood Mineral Cosmetics. Their Mineral Rice Setting Powder also provides great coverage for those with acne without causing harm to the skin and creating more breakouts.

Ages 30–39

It’s at this stage in life that we begin to see the smiling lines and crow’s feet appear, but these are to be celebrated rather than hidden with makeup. It’s best to use products that enhance your features rather than cover them up. Invest in a good primer and it will give your skin a silky smooth feel which will allow your foundation to glide right on. Arbonne cosmetics has a great vegan-friendly makeup primer which is rich in vitamins and smooths the surface of the skin to reduce the visibility of lines and wrinkles. Also, to enhance your features, get your hands on a good mineral powder and a muted blush. There’s no need to go wild with your cosmetics though, keep it simple with colour as well as coverage.

Ages 40–49

Being kind to your skin is as important as ever now. It’s during this time that you will notice your skin becoming thinner and dryer and lose its elasticity. While powdered makeup might be okay for women in their 30s and younger, now is the time to start using an oil-based foundation and a liquid primer to give your skin a supple and glowing finish. Keep your makeup light and be sure to colour match your skin well — you can have this done professionally at your local makeup counter or beauty bar. If you’re noticing dark spots appearing here and there, use a good quality concealer to do away with them. A little colour never hurt anyone though, and at this stage it is actually a good idea to add some warm colours to your complexion, so remember to add some colour with a natural-toned blush or a gorgeous lip gloss. The shape and texture of the skin around your eyes are also going to change at this point, so enhance the size of your eyes by using an eyelash curler and a light, clump-free mascara.

Ages 50–59

Now is the time to embrace your beautiful self and tone down the colours and anything too shiny or glossy. Keep your makeup simple by using natural tones which enhance your natural beauty. Use lightly-coloured matte lipstick and if you are going to use eye shadow, avoid bright colours and choose a liquid or oil-based product — this will look and feel better on your skin. Be cautious when using a coloured lipstick at this time, especially if you have many wrinkles around your mouth and lips. This could cause the lipstick to bleed into your skin, which is not flattering at all. Best to use a soft-toned matte colour or, better still, bring attention to your eyes or your eyebrows instead.

Age 60+

We might be tempted to wear more makeup as we age to cover and hide the blemishes and wrinkles, but as we age gracefully we realise that less really is more. Add a hint of colour on the cheeks or use a light lipstick and you will look as gorgeous as ever. Keep the makeup light and natural in your 60s and if you love good coverage, try a light mineral powder to give you a very light but radiant coverage. Take care of your skin by using a good moisturiser and drinking lots of water to keep your skin radiant and hydrated.

How to take care of your skin at any age:

  • Quit smoking
  • Stay out of the sun — slip, slop, slap!
  • Drink plenty of water, every day
  • Eat healthily
  • Smile, nothing is more gorgeous than a smile
