Grading human hair extension quality
To make an informed decision when you purchase human hair extensions, it is necessary to understand the terminology used in the industry. Grading of the human hair sets available indicates the manner in which it is harvested and prepared, and is a guideline to its durability and value. Knowing how human hair extensions are categorised will help you decide which is right for you.
Remy virgin hair
For hair quality, remy hair is referred to as “virgin hair” and is categorised as premium. It is bundled in such a manner that the roots of the hair are on one side and the tips of the hair are on the opposite side. Placing the hair in this manner makes the extension last longer, less likely to have snags and tangles and overall more durable.
Remy hair can be single or double drawn. Single drawn remy hair is taken directly from the scalp by shaving the head, with extra care taken to remove the very short hair along with the longer hair for a ponytail-like appearance. In single drawn, there will be a variation of lengths in the extension.
Double drawn remy hair is the finest quality, with uniform wave lengths consistent in every extension. There will be no shorter hairs in the piece — length is uniform throughout the extension.
For both these types of extensions there are premium grades to consider. Graded A Quality welts of virgin remy hair extensions are undirectional and characterized by double drawn hair, so the entire welt is formed with hair of the same length. Graded B Quality is also made up of double drawn hair placed undirectionally, but the length of the hair in the extension may vary between 1 – 2 inches. A Quality C graded welt has the cuticles intact and is undirectional. This extension contains hair shafts of different lengths with greater variance throughout.
The most commonly purchased and less expensive human hair extensions are non-remy, with roots and tips mixed in to the extension. They can be purchased in a grade called “tangle-free.” This type is obtained by shaving off the cuticles or the ends to reduce friction among the hairs and minimize snarling. Single drawn non-remy sets may have a 2 inch length difference in the strands incorporated into the extension. Non-remy double drawn sets are very good quality with consistent strand length throughout the extension.
Whether you choose remy or standard human hair extensions, they should be versatile and durable. Because they are 100 per cent human hair, you will have the ability to style, cut and colour the extension just as you would your own natural hair, but will gain a fuller look and luxurious length.
