1Good Vibrations – Beach Boys

What list of summer themed songs is complete without a track from the world’s penultimate beach-going boys?! We could have picked from any one of about hundred brilliant summer-infused tracks, but Good Vibrations is such a classic, it stands out as number one!

2California Gurls – Katy Perry

Katy Perry wrote California Gurls as a West Coast version of Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s Empire State of Mind. All about sunshine, sex and Snoop Dogg, Cali Gurls is a certified summer anthem — even if it was released in winter here in Oz.

3One Summer – Daryl Braithwaite

Daryl Braithwaite had a massive album in 1988 called Edge, and One Summer was a number one hit that the singer penned himself. Nothing conjures up images of the sun, surf and sand like the first few bars of this iconic song!

4Sounds of Then – Gangajang

Sounds of Then has become synonymous with Australian summers, ever since Coca Cola used it in an advertising campaign back in the late 80s. Band member Mark Callaghan says the track started as a poem about his family’s move from England to Bundaberg, and it has since become famous for its infamous line, “chickow”.

5Summertime – DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

DJ Jazzy Jeff and his best mate Will Smith, aka The Fresh Prince, composed this summer jam back in the early 90s, as an ode to cruising around, playing basketball and picking up girls. Just goes to show that not much has changed in rap music for over 20 years…

6Like Wow, Wipe Out – Hoodoo Gurus

The Hoodoo Gurus are one of Australia’s best -loved bands, with Like Wow, Wipe Out being one of the greatest summer BBQ songs this country has ever produced!

7Love Shack – B52’s

No song puts everyone in a better mood than this B52’s classic about a funky little shack that’s set way back in the middle of a field. Sure, we’ve spent the past 20 years wondering what “tiiiiiiinnnnnnnn roof, rusted,” actually means in the context of the song, but nevertheless, no summer mixtape is complete without the inclusion of this track.

8Brighter Than Sunshine – Aqualung

This song isn’t necessarily a summer song, but we loved the sunny theme so much that it needed to be included! Let the lyrics do the talking: “What a feeling in my soul; Love burns brighter than sunshine. Let the rain fall, I don’t care. I’m yours and suddenly you’re mine… And it’s brighter than sunshine.”

9Summer Rain – Belinda Carlisle

This song is especially appropriate for this list, considering how wet the Aussie summer has been this season. Belinda Carlisle had the most success with this song Down Under in 1990, where it sat in the top 10 for three weeks.

10Summer Nights – John Travolta and Olivia Newton John

Name one party or wedding that hasn’t featured a rendition of Summer Nights from the Grease soundtrack: “Thooooosee su-hum-mer, niiiiiiiii-hiiiiiiiiiights!!” This song will continue to haunt John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John forever more, but it lives on as a classic summer song.
