Is this really the face of a 50-year-old woman? Yes, it is — and the good news for us mere mortals is that Elle Macpherson’s youthful appearance is the result of three simple things. Apparently.

According to the former supermodel, love, laughter and super greens are all you need to look like her. OK, maybe that’s a little too much to expect. But it’s worth a try, right?

Now being in love isn’t always easy. Some may say that the ups and downs of modern relationships are more likely to add to the wrinkles than help them disappear. However, the negative effects of any quarrels can be balanced out by an active, loving, committed sexual relationship. So says neuropsychologist David Weeks, whose 10-year study into retaining youth found that couples who made love three times a week or more are likely to look at least 10 years younger than couples who get less action in the bedroom.

“Pleasure derived from sex is a crucial factor in preserving youth. It makes us happy and produces chemicals telling us so,” Weeks claims. “I would say that famous people with youthful good looks all enjoy very active and healthy sex lives.”

Yes, laughter really is the best medicine, says psychotherapist Jeanne Segal. It’s an extremely powerful antidote to pain, anxiety and friction. According to Segal, laughter relaxes the body, boosts the immune system, improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which in turn helps prevent heart attacks. As for the mental benefits, injecting a little more humour into your life is said to improve mood and relieve stress. Happy faces are more attractive than miserable ones, right?

Super greens

OK, so what sets so-called “super” greens apart from ordinary greens? Does our lettuce and cucumber salad just not cut it any more? The term has been used to describe dark green, leafy vegetables in recent years. However, it’s one coined by the media and not nutritionists. “There is no specific definition of a superfood and no way of testing whether a food is super or not,” explains the British Nutrition Foundation. Having said that the health benefits of these elite veggies are undisputed. Kale, broccoli, spinach and chard all have high levels of important nutrients. According to the British Nutrition Foundation, these foods are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin K, iron and magnesium. These nutrients do a whole range of awesome things for our bodies and minds, including boosting our immune systems and keeping bones, muscles and teeth healthy.
